Written in a hotel in Arizona, February, 2008. A great story for the present time, including those who want to do or feel new stuff. Farewell To Fear starts a week from Thursday. Click Here for information.

This hotel I’m staying at in Scottsdale is pretty neat. Wireless isn’t working in my room though, so I’m doing all my “internetting” on the public computers in the lobby. They have a constant stream of music from the 1980’s in the lobby. Suits me fine, since that’s the generation I most identify with.
When I walked in Wednesday morning to check in on how things were going I heard music from Big Country. Most of you are familiar with the song, “In A Big Country.” It’s one of my favorites from that time period, and a great one to sing when I want to amuse myself or torture my kids.
Here’s the thing….it was some other song from Big Country. Yes, they did have some other songs during that time, although they can safely be classified as “One Hit Wonders.”
Since I’m in a place where strange and wonderful things are happening - a place I deliberately put myself in a few weeks ago I decided to find the symbolic meaning of this song. And it was pretty easy.
I love In A Big Country. The beat, the lyrics, the energy…they all ring true for me. It’s one of those songs that could be called the “background music of my life.
So I heard something else from this great bunch of musicians. The same great stuff was there, but they BRANCHED OUT.
And in a very real sense it’s what I’m doing now. My core hasn’t changed. I’m still me. I love what I do and get better at it everyday.
And I’m BRANCHING OUT from there. Moving forward. Taking myself out of that comfort zone. Taking some risks. Meeting new people, going new places. Great stuff.
See anything there for YOU?
You’ve got great stuff going. Something in your life is working well…probably a lot of stuff. Heck, if you’ve gotten this far in one piece you must be doing something right.
So take it with you. Take your skills, your competence, your positive emotions….and take ‘em for a spin.
Do something different, and still be YOU.
See where it takes you.
That’s what Big Country did.
That’s what many of my friends are doing. Two in particular (you know who you are!)
That’s what I’m doing.

And in a big country, dreams stay with you, like a lover’s voice, fires the mountainside.
